Tips and hints

Here are a few suggestions to help improve your application and boost your chances of success.

  • Please write in clear, simple English – avoid jargon.
  • Acronyms – assume we don't know what they mean. The only exception is your organisation name, which should be written in full the first time. Then an acronym is acceptable.
  • Read the Ross Trust’s exclusions.
  • Familiarise yourself with the Biodiversity Conservation and Educational Equity Granting Guidelines and Theories of Change.  If your project does not fit within these funding priorities, we suggest you apply to a trust or foundation better aligned to your project. If you are not sure, please submit an enquiry via our Contact us page.
  • When you read the theory of change document, you will be able to identify the lever of change and indicators most closely aligned to the program for which you are seeking funds. You will be asked to report on these indicators in the acquittal process.
  • An application for a Smart Grant must complete the eligibility check to be sure you are eligible before you start – you will need to know your organisation’s ABN, entity type and whether you are registered with the ACNC to complete this step.
  • We recommend that you print the relevant sample application form (biodiversity conservation or educational equity) and collate all the required attachments. This will allow you to see all the information required in advance.
  • Write in specific terms rather than generalisations. Include specific facts and figures, especially regarding track record and outcomes.
  • Word limits apply in our applications – it is important we understand your project as succinctly as possible.
  • Ensure that your budget is accurate and reflects the full cost of the project including the value of in-kind support.
  • Expect to hear from us within eight weeks if we have further questions about your application. You will hear from us about the final outcome of your grant application within 12 weeks.
  • If you still have questions, take a look at our FAQs and please Contact us if you are unsure about anything.
